Newsletter - September 2006

Dear Member

Welcome to the third edition of the Association Newsletter. Again I hope you find this informative and interesting. I hope everybody had a good summer break and that many of you had the opportunity to visit France and polish up your language skills.

The last three months has been quite active and successful for the Association with the Summer Wine and Boules evenings. ….and the Alton Band this time made it to Bricquebec in early September! The next three months should prove equally busy. The main social event is new to our calendar, an Annual Dinner. This takes place on Saturday, 28th October. Prior to that though we have a “Walk with Talk” on Sunday, 1st October and a visit from the Bricquebec Badminton Club for the weekend of 14th October.

Who would believe that it is nearly a year since I took over the Presidency? Our AGM takes place on Friday, 17th November at the Goods Shed. I hope you can make it, because, as well as the business part of the evening, we will be providing some wine and hopefully a talk on Olives or cheese (yet to be finalised) with a tasting session!! More news to follow.

Look forward to seeing you at these events,

TerryIf you believe you can help in any way, we would welcome your support in the future.

ALTON COLLEGE JAZZ BAND VISIT BRICQUEBEC

Jumelage Anglais: un concert varie et de qualite

That was the headline in Ouest-France on 2nd September. Having been prevented from crossing the Channel in March due to bad weather, students from Alton College Music Department finally made it to Bricquebec at the beginning of September.

It was the weekend of the Alresford Show and it was the same foul weather in Bricquebec! A party of over 30 musicians from Alton College, accompanied by their teacher, Martin Read,2 concerts over the weekend. Each of the events attracted an audience of over a hundred, many of whom were astonished by the quality and diversity of the music. The musicians were hosted by the French families.

All in all a resounding success, our congratulations go to Martin and the students.

“This popular musical event seems to be going from strength to strength”

REPORTS ON RECENT EVENTS

Summer Wine—Friday 14th July

What a fantastic evening! Whilst many parts of France celebrated Bastille day with some rather heavy thunder storms, Alresford was blessed with some quite spectacular weather on 14th July.

The house and gardens at Weir House were also looking at their best. Over 50 members, friends and guests attended and enjoyed several glasses of wine and a finger buffet.

As the sun set it was also an ideal time to stroll through the reinstated “bog” garden along the side of the River Alre to finish the evening off.

Once again our thanks go out to George and Jeanette Hollingbery for their hospitality.

Boules at Itchen Abbas Village Hall - Sunday 30 July

The winnersThis was the annual Boules and Bowling Competition to which Alresford Twinning Association has been invited by The Itchen Abbas Bowling Club.

Some 38 Twinning members and friends, including 4 younger players, attended.

The weather was good and a well organised afternoon of Petanque games was enjoyed by all. The honours went to Ron Bagley as overall winner of the competition with Trish Ferris in second place.

The evening BBQ was most enjoyable with good food and wine to round off the day.
